Re joining transducer cable on sounder
« on: September 18, 2011, 01:00:59 PM »
Hi all,

Yes I accidentally cut my Transducer cable on my Humminbird 383c when I was taking it off an old yak. The transducer is pristine.
I have re joined the cable carefully - complete with the silver isolating paper from the 3rd wire.

The GPS function works of course and so does the temp reading, the depth reading is all over the place and there is no sounder readings at all.

As last resort I will just have to replace the transducer but hope I don't need too.
Cheers,
Pam

I would reopen joint and make certain that same coloured wires are rejoined with soldered joints and well insulated. then rejoin shielding and wrap whole joint in alfoil and then encase in glue filled shrink tube.I have used this method several times with success.
Are there 3 wires plus the shielding? If so none of them should be connected to the shielding.
Cheers

Hi Ray,
Thanks for your response.
This is what I have done. The two coloured wires are connected correctly then covered independently in liquid insulation from each other then covered with the foil, correct side out. The third wire wasn't coated and appeared it needed to be shielded from the other two.
Hence the foil paper. I re joined that 3rd wire then covered the whole lot in liquid insulation then the stretch silicone type wrap.

So, unless the foil is touching where it shouldn't, I thought i had done a good job. I double twisted all wires instead of soldering because I don't trust lead not to powder up. I do have some low melt silver solder that doesn't tarnish ( low as in lead heat )  but can't find it in the back of our shipping container, haven't got to the back yet.

Cheers,
Pam

OI am not a fan of liquid insulation. I prefer to either insulate the join with shrink tube of even just insulation tape.
I also recommend soldering the joint with resin cored solder.
Does the third wire have insulation on it or is it just a bare wire.
It sounds to me that the wire that the wire that conducts the transducer pings is faulty as the temp is working ok.
Any chance that one of the twisted joints has come undone.? or that the lead is damaged in another spot?
You did strip the insulation off the wires before twisting?
Please dont get insulted by my questions as I do not know your level of expertise and am just trying to think what may be causing your problem.
I see that you are in the granite belt there is a friendly guy on Ausfish who lives in Warwick who could help you out or try your local auto electrician. It should only take 10 minutes to fix.
Cheers
Ray

Thanks again Ray,
I will NEVER use liquid insulation ever again.
Not insulted at all by your questions, they do need to be checked.
Yes I did strip the wire and the 3rd was bare already.

My thoughts are that the foil isolator may be compromised . I doubt my electrical twists will ever come undone or fail to connect.
I guess I  have been compromised by comments such as " you can never re join transducer cable etc "

Anyway I will now cut out the offending bit and re do again but this time using solder and heat shrink etc. now I know it can be done.

Cheers,
Pam
