Baroon Pocket Dam Closure info please.
« on: June 01, 2012, 05:24:22 PM »
I know that boating access to Baroon Pocket dam is denied when the water reaches the post of the signs at the 2 ramps.
How does this correlate to the actual dam level which is reported on the seq water website?
I receive test messages from seq water advising when the dam is spilling.
They do give me a link for further info but I cannot get the link to work. Probably due to my poor eyesight and very small writing on my mobile screen.
Does anyone have the correct link.
Is access closed as soon as the dam commences to spill or does it have to be a certain height over the spillway?
How do you find out if the dam is closed over the weekend or after hours.
It is a long drive for me to go and find that the dam is closed.
Cheers
Ray

My understanding is the closure begins when the lake heights have reached 100% capacity Ray.

The water level reaches the bottom of the sign posts when the spillway is about 100mm over. (Official closed level) Often they dont close the dam if its just over and they dont mind you going on (when seriously over, they put barriers on the ramps). Easiest way to check is to look at the flood gauge info.

0 is spillway level, so if the reading is at 0.10 or higher, its likely to be closed. Curently its just spilling, reading at 0.00,  its open.

Thanks
Exactly what i was looking for. Now in bookmarks. Hopefully nit too much rain over the weekend so a Monday Morning trip will be ok.
Also a bad time for any bass dam to be swpilling with all the bass nice and fat and ready to breed. This spillway is such a long drop so not many would survive the long drop.
 Cheers
Ray

Goodby bass hullo mary. its .47 of a meter over maybe sufficient volume to be a bit of a cushion at the bottom.
Cheers

Here is a photo of the southern indicator sign taken today.
Official Flood gauge reading was -0.02m at the time taken. (2cm below spilling)
Basically when the reading is at zero, the water is at the bottom of the plinth. As you can see its got to rise about around 150mm more for the water to actually touch the sign legs.

°Well I got caught this morning. 2 hour drive and bribe breakfast on way for daughter for nothing. No doubt as a result of Can Do's cutting of the public service.
Water had well and truly dropped low enough overnight for access to be permitted, but dam still closed. Probably no staff available to come and remove the signs until office hours monday. (Note, for reference, flood gauge reading at time of the photo was 0.08m over)

So a new hint, if the water has been deeper than .15m on the flood gauge since the last normal week day, expect the dam to still be closed. Photos below.
(Forgive the spots, obviously had not cleaned the camera since the last rust water yak trip! )
