Wear your lifejacket

IFS regularly checks recreational boaters for licences, safety equipment and compliance on behalf of MAST. This past weekend IFS checks undertaken on Woods Lake have raised concerns for MAST with seven (7) infringement notices issued for not wearing lifejackets. This is of particular concern for MAST as the likelihood of a fatality, if you fall in the water without a life jacket, is five times higher than if you are wearing a life jacket. After nearly 15 years of warning boaters about the dangers of entering the water without a life jacket it is very disappointing to see so many boaters taking such a high risk with their safety. Last year two boaters drowned on inland waters. MAST would like to see a fatality free year this summer but there is no chance of that if boaters do not take responsibility for their own, as well their crews, lives by making sure that their life jackets are worn correctly and that any inflatable jackets are serviced regularly.
If you use an inflatable life jacket it is critical that your jacket is serviced as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Before putting your jacket on you should always check to make sure the cylinder is securely fastened in the inflation device, and that the jacket fits firmly.  If you have a crotch strap fitted, make sure your wear it. These quick checks will help make the jacket perform better and may be the difference between making it home alive or becoming a statistic.
Anyone who suspects or witnesses unlawful activity is urged to contact Stephen Hepworth Manager (Compliance and Operations) at the Inland Fisheries Service on 0438 338 530 as soon as possible.
