About Neil Slater - written by Garry Fitzgerald

Neil Slater has lived all 38 years of his life in Geelong, Victoria. Neil has travelled on many interstate fishing trips including NT, NSW, Tassie and Queensland visiting friends and family and meeting the local fish population.

Neil has fished Geelong and the surrounding area since he was introduced to the local redfin population by his late grandfather over 30 years ago in the Barwon River that runs though the heart of town. This was followed up by riding his bike down to the Barwon with his mates to get stuck in to the local carp population over many teenage summers and eventually the purchase of a 10 foot tinnie with a pull start 2 1/2 hp outboard that helped get him amongst the trout in Lake Modewarre many years ago.
His primary focus growing up was freshwater fishing and he spent many hours on the 'local' waters of Lake Modewarre near Moriac and Lake Murdeduke near Winchelsea.
Other lakes across the state were also been a frequented with the awesome camping at Rocklands and monster trout of Toolondo a favourite.
Since the drought driven demise of these fantastic trout lakes, Neil, along with a lot of Victoria's trout fishermen, has spent the majority of time fishing the crater lakes of Purrumbete and Bullen Merri near Camperdown in the western district and travelling to the Murray River and Lake Mulwala chasing native fish.
Neil has been contributing to fishing magazines and websites, both national and international, for about 6 years and is now a regular contributor for Victorian Fishing Monthly, Sweetwater Fishing and the Echo newspaper.
Neil has written a saltwater fishing book (soon to be released) and contributed to another titled 'Land Based Fishing Guide to Port Phillip and Corio Bays'
Neil is also currently in a Provincial Victoria TV ad where his fly fishing skills were filmed for the ad at Aire Crossing near Apollo Bay.

A dedicated father of two girls aged under 7, he still manages to round up enough 'brownie points' to snag a well deserved weekend away fishing Victoria's 'Sweet' water.
