Yak to Mud

Hey guys,

My saltwater tinny is out of action atm and I want to go fish at Mud island. How are the currents through between the mouth of the brissy and Mud, is going out there on a yak viable?

I haven't paddled it (damn rust water), but know a few who have. As always, pick your days and take all the safety gear you can.

I attempted it a few weeks back with a mate, he had an electric on his yak and I was on another mate's Outback. Not even 20 minutes in his electric died but instead of turning back I decided to tow him, we got to the wall at the mouth and made the call to go no further. I could have done the distance if I wasn't towing my mate but it is a bloody long way and currents, tugs, container ships and all the other river traffic means you have to keep your wits about you and if at any point you don't feel right about it then don't go any further. What sort of kayak are you on and what sort of speed do you expect to maintain? Also what sort of experience do you have on a kayak? If you are launching at fishos take the tide into account for your return to the ramp, we came back in against it and nearly didn't make it, if we had have been turned the slightest bit we were in trouble.

From fishos ramp take the shortcut through the creek opposite and straight across to Mud, half tide only route though.

thanks for your help everyone. I'm actually thinking now of setting up three cheap electrics on the yak. One at the back and one on each side. Has anyone every worked with a set up like this?

You may have to towa tinnie to carry your batteries.

I'm thinking of using solar energy to power them so hopefully only 1 battery needed.

OK, you'll just have to watch for ships running over your extension lead.

Are you for real? My mate couldn't make it  30mins without his 1 cheap electric dying on him and leaving him with a yak that was fairly well impossible to paddle in the Brissy, I'd like to see how you're going to manage 3! Maybe forget about going to Mud and stick to calmer waters with less traffic.
