Ssshhhhh - it's a secret

The locals keep this one to themselves.

Lake Mackintosh, on the West Coast near Tullah, holds some great trout. The lake is full from recent rain and the fish will be hungry after the cold weather. Although mostly a boat fishing lake, there are some shore based angling opportunities. Try the area from the Mackintosh Dam to Tullahbardine Dam. Casting a surface lure (like a Fish Cake) in this area can produce some exciting action, particularly at night and early in the season. Bright coloured lures work well in this tannin coloured water.

Fishing Lake Mackintosh from a boat opens up opportunities.  Spinning amongst the dead trees or trolling along the tree line with deep running lures works well.  As the weather warms up, the midges hatch and then the wind lanes provide exciting fishing. This lake has a good mudeye hatch and beetles falling onto the water brings fish to the surface. The northern end of the lake, where the Vale and Fury rivers enter, provide shelter from the wind.

This is a scenic place to visit.  Mount Farrell shelters the western shore of the lake and an often snow-capped Mount Murchison towers to the South. Accommodation and food is available at nearby Tullah.

Lake Mackintosh is one of the best kept secrets for trout fishing so we challenge you to try somewhere a little different this season when looking for a place to fish.

Lake Mackintosh opens on Saturday 6 of August 2016 until Sunday 30 April 2017.  You can fish with bait, artificial lures or fly.  There is a bag limit of 12 and the minimum length is 220mm.
