Lake Purrumbete and Bullen Merri (vic) report
« on: June 24, 2012, 08:41:57 PM »
Just had a weekend down there with a few mates. The weather was nasty and I don't reckon it hit 10C while we were there. Fished in 20 knot westerlies with sheets of "Otway mist" (light rain) continually coming down most of the time.
The lads fished Purrumbete Friday night before I got there and caught a few trout up to about a kilo casting minnow lures around the weed beds. We fished Bullen Merri Saturday for a few hours and got nothing. Actually, I caught a steel can (with a ring pull! Piece of Aussie drinking history that..!) on my ultra deep Merlin but that was it. Speaking to a gent at the ramp who said that he did see a bloke catch two trout around a kilo very early in the morning but that was it.
We fished Purrumbete that arvo and into dusk just casting lures in the shallows. We hooked and released a few small trout and got stuck into some reddies up to around 600g or so. The next morning was cold, wet and windy so I cuddled a coffee and the others went out in their snow gear. They trolled and cast the paint off their lures and lost a fair 2kg brown fishing in Purrumbete again.

Great weekend apart from the rain. Had a roast pork Sat night and flame cooked eye fillet Friday night. Ate like kings :)

Gotta hand it to you blokes down there Slates, you're one dedicated bunch.

How did the reddies go on the plate or didn't they get a chance next to the roast hog & hereford steaks?

Cheers,

fitz..

Those reddies are the best freshwater eating fish going.

G'day men.
Yeah, the reddies were donated to the boat owner (I forgot they were in his livewell). We were pretty busy inhaling the other species lower on the food chain too :)
