MEDIA RELEASE

STUDY INTO WILCANNIA WEIR BEGINS
The long-awaited upgrade of Wilcannia Weir is one step closer, with the NSW Government today announcing funding for a feasibility study into the project.
Minister for Natural Resources, Lands and Water Kevin Humphries today announced the NSW Government will provide $189,000 in funding to undertake investigations into a proposed upgrade of the Wilcannia weir and associated works.
“The local community have been crying out for this work to be undertaken for more than a decade, but were repeatedly ignored by the former Labor Government,” Mr Humphries said.
“The NSW Liberals & Nationals have listened to the people of Wilcannia and will provide funding for this very important project.
“This project will examine works that will not only improve water security for the town, but also deliver positive social outcomes and recreational opportunities for the people of Wilcannia.”
Member for Murray-Darling John Williams said preliminary work on the weir study had commenced in 2003, but had been stalled due to unresolved environmental and other issues.
“This funding will enable the NSW Government to get on with the job of identifying the best options and move this long overdue project forward,” Mr Wlliams said.
“It is estimated the study will take 9 to 12 months to be completed.
“Once the findings of the investigation are available we will be able to assess project costs, funding options and implementation time frames.”
Funding for the feasibility study is being made available under the Water Security for Regions Program.
