Hinze Dam Fishing Report
« on: March 29, 2014, 07:44:07 PM »
3 of us fished the eastern arm of the hinze this morning. We did not try the edges as too much submergede timber and lantana in most spots. We used live shrimp and caught most fish on the edges of the timber in 20 to 25ft ofwater.
Plenty of banded grunter to steal the bait.
Best bass only 38cm.
Dam has risen about 3 feet so nice short walk on the ramp.
 Cheers
Ray

Well done on the fishing results Ray.

Been keeping tabs on the Hinze water levels there on BOM.
On Tuesday before the main rain event it was -2.44m below the spillway ... mid arvo today peaked at -1.02m ...  and tonight is -1.04m and falling again.

Lt Nerang is still a bit above, and Numinbah is steady or falling, so probably little change now

Went to Western Arm this morning and after a bit of searching found a couple of schools on the points on the upstream side if bass bay.Fish mostly holding around 10 feet in 20 to 30 feet of water.Best bass 44cm.As usual plenty of bandies. Fishing live shrimp.
Bit of a sour note when we got back to ramp as some pig had dumped an old mattress and other junk in the middle of the car park. Advised SEQ water so they could clean it up.
Cheers

Cheers for the report mate   :GoodPost)

Question re. how you're fishing..
You say you're fishing with live shrimp, but you're still targeting different structures in the water.
I've not done that style before? Are you bobbing along or flogging them out there like lures?

I'm in Robina and chase bass a fair bit here and further south but only with lures. Never really thought to use livies (maybe that's because I don't fish impoundments?).

Cheers, Marty V  :)

Sinker on top of hook. if fish showing on sounder just drop shrimp straight down to the desired depth and wait for bite.
If not showing usually prospect with one bait at around 10 feet and another one wind up from the bottom, No need to bob as the shrimp are pinned by the tail and naturally jump around.
If things are slow may just give the rod a small lift to entice a bite. Sometimes the bass seem to sit and look at the bait and as soon as there is some movement they hit it.
Cheers

Unreal.  :youbeauty
Cheers Ray. I don't see myself shrimping anytime soon but it's fresh hearing different styles of bass-ing.

How do you find your gut/gill hook rates go? I'm fairly for C&R and I'd imagine that some of the bigger specimens wouldn't hesitate to put the shrimp straight down haha.

I use number 1 wide gape hooks with crushed barbs and it is very rare to gut hook using the wide gape hooks.
