The Cod Squad and the Holy Grail
« on: August 27, 2012, 09:15:48 PM »
PART 1

Squarebear , Fishbrain and myself went for a day trip down to the Dumaresq River again last Sunday for one last session before the Murray Cod closed season begins on the border rivers. The weather and water was markedly warmer than my last trip down that way a month or so back which was a very welcome change. Also I really needed to get a fish in my new yak.

Squarebear with a cod.

The river wildlife has awoken from its winter slumber.

My first 2 fish in my new yak where StevenM's favourite species. He won't see any of these in September :)

A fat cod for Squarebear.

Fishbrain with a rat.

Another of Squarebear's cods.

Finally a cod , after seeing the others getting into a few.

Fishbrain did have a special moment during the day, a "Holy Grail" moment. Here's a sneak peak , I think its worthy of its own part in this trip report, Part 2 will follow.......when I load up some more pics.

Cheers,
Dave.

PART 2

Once upon a time in my circle of friends, the holy grail in sweetwater fishing was catching that unicorn bass or the elusive metery cod(for me its still the metery cod). But of late many have started trying their hand at making their own lures. Recently I took Steve(Bushwacker) down to the Dumaresq where he had 2 decent hookups on his own lures , but didn't land either fish. Sel( Nativeman) a week ago landed his first 2 ever cod on his own hand made lures.

Brad(Fishbrain) had a holy grail moment yesterday too. He persisted all morning with a lure he made from scratch. Wood that was sourced from the highest of mountain peaks, countless hours of whittling and sanding. Many more hours of painstaking perfection with the airbrush using paint sourced from the finest supa cheap has to offer. This piece of wood , cloaked in its dark colours , weaved a web of deception that fooled this awesome cod(the largest fish we have landed in the last few trips anyway).

Even the fish spewed up in all the excitement.

It really wanted that lure too, only the bib visible.

The fish has a gut on it like the angler that caught it.

Brad got some great footage as this fish swam away after release.

Cheers,
Dave.

Brad, I don't think the old bloke is gunna like being the one in the skirt though. :FunnyPost) It would be even worse if you made the skirt pink , he'd love that.
