Student undertakes work placement at IFS to finish university degree

Kacey-Lee Fairall is a student from Charles Sturt University in Albury, NSW. She is currently undertaking her fourth year in a Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management. In order to graduate, students must complete 10-12 weeks work placement with an environmental business, agency or government department. After developing a keen interest in river and floodplain ecology, Kacey approached the Inland Fisheries Service in order to undertake her work experience to meet the requirements of her degree. The aim of this placement is to apply prior learning from other subjects whilst also gaining practical experience and workplace skills. So far Kacey has been involved in a range of activities, which include native fish surveys in Woods Lake, trout stocking and hatchery work at the Salmon Ponds, and on Carp Management Program (CMP). While working with IFS Kacey has gained experience with WH&S, general boating activities, fish husbandry, checking gill and fyke nets, and using the LOTEK receivers to pin point the locations of the radio transmitter carp. Kacey hopes to gain a better understanding of how the CMP operates, gain practical experience in a range of IFS programs, and learn more about the diversity of freshwater ecosystems in Tasmania.
