Kayak PFD's Queensland
« on: November 11, 2013, 08:55:23 PM »
Hi everyone, new to this forum and to kayak fishing. Just wondering if anyone can tell me, or provide a link to the requirements for PFD's with kayaks in queensland rivers, creek and impoundments. Thanks

Currently not required to have a PFD on while kayaking in Qld flatwater, only a "recommendation"

Without a doubt some do-gooder will impose their agenda on the right politician and we will have to wear them.....but currently, not law.

No, there is no legislation requiring that.  Out your way you don't legally have to have them anywhere when you are yakking.

That probably wouldn't apply to the main basin if that area gets opened.  (fingers crossed)

True...!!!  I said that to the group I took down the Brisbane river recently. That was enough for one fellow to grab one and wear it all day.

I have only fallen out once at Big W while test paddling a kayaks stability in the middle of the day too. The initial shock of the cold water left me frozen for a 2-3 seconds and it was the pdf that kept my mouth and nose out of the water. After the initial shock I was able to get back on the kayak with no harm O wait my phone was in my pocket and was buggered but apart from that it was all good.

Cheers Brad

If memory serves me correctly, we had a rollover during first comp on Wivenhoe. It was caused by leaning over to land a fish,  when wave hit from other side. Be happy to be corrected, as I am not real sure.
I think Brads point is good especially during winter, and it's a good idea anytime if you are going to be a long way from the shore.
If in doubt, be fitted out.
Happy yakking

I think there were 2 actually. StevenM was one but I think someone else took a roll as well. Not hard to do in 30knot winds and big swells for a dam. I think that was the reason one other year that the main part of the lake was off limits due to it being deemed too dangerous to fish it.

I personally don't wear a life jacket at all. If I deem it to be so dangerous that I need a life jacket then I just don't bother going out, it's not worth the risk. In saying that most of my fishing is done in skinny creeks where it is no more than 10 metres to the bank most of the time.
