Dumaresq River, Texas.
« on: April 26, 2015, 05:46:32 PM »
StevenM and I hit the Dumaresq river for an afternoon and evening session over the weekend. From where we launched the plan was to go upstream and back by dark, and then after a quick meal break head downstream in the moonlight until we got tired.

The view looking upstream.

The view looking downstream.

Our craft.

Over the Summer the Dumaresq has had a couple of flood flows and the water was still a little brown.

Steve was first on the board with a cod. It fell to a Garra Tera.

My first fell also to a Garra Tera.

Smile for the camera.

As the arvo progressed the wind started to pick up.

Steve's second cod, also on a Garra.

My second cod came off the surface.

And third off the same snag pile.

As the sun set the wind dropped out.

Steve's first surface cod I captured on camera, but he was fishing quite a distance from me.

At this point we turned around and headed back.

After a quick break and feed, we saddled up the torches got back to it. Drifting down stream on the current it wasn't long for the first cod come out to play.

After one of the portages , Steve had some fun with spinnerbaits off the bank.

It wasn't full on action bite wise but enough to keep you interested.
This guy fell to a King Fisher Mantis.

I can't remember the name of this lure, bought it at the first lure expo from the secret river fellas.

The highlight of the night for me was run in with a very large cod. It wouldn't fit past its shoulders into Steve's net, I thought I had it beat after I got the lip grippers onto it. After the photo while Steve was trying to drag me to the bank, it slipped off the grippers and eventually broke me off while I was stuffing around trying to get them back on.

It kept the lure, again dunno what it was, only that it was produced by Taylor made Lures. I was wet and cold after this so we called it a night. I'm still chasing that metery I guess. :(

Thanks for the laughs Steve and the lift.

Cheers,
Dave.

Well my side of the story is a little bit different to Daves.

Nahh, only kidding.

This trip was an improvised one as the original fish we were going to the event was cancelled. It made things easier as we now panned to head out at an agreed gentleman’s hour on Saturday morning. So after leaving home at 7 to head to Dave’s place to grab his gear and kayak. All went to plan and we were on the road about 8.15 and heading south.

We elected to grab a feed in town before heading to the river. So we bulked up on lunch as there was to be no dinner and hit the camp and launch spot. We headed upstream in pursuit of the mighty Murray.

Dave said he was going to keep changing lures after he caught a fish. I never said anything to him but played the game as well. My first fish fell to a light green and yellow “Tarki”, not the terra as mentioned. Pick in Daves post.

The next fish came on a Purple “Terra”. Pic also above. I swapped between timber hard bodies and spinner baits. Nothing fell to the spinner bait in the arvo but with Dave getting hits and misses on surface I moved to one of my own. I changed this a few times and ended up with a Pooter-dore which claimed the fish you can see in Dave’s post.

By late in the arvo of Saturday I sort of realised that Dave was taking pictures and added 1 and 2 together and got 97 or something like that.

My first pic was this one looking upstream. I true love it out there.

Just another I Phone pic as I don’t carry a dedicated camera anymore. Dave had different ones but and some sort of Sefie Kevie Stick.
We turned around at the end of that pool from memory and started working our way back to camp. We hit a few spots on the way back down for no result. Had misses and drops but that’s fishing.

We left the kayaks down on the opposite side of the river and went climbed back up the bank to grab some refreshments and dose up on insect repellent and our night lights.

It’s a bit funky fishing at night on a section of river that you don’t know. Dave knew the area well and gave me a few tips along the way.

I got the one fish in a bit of fast flowing water on a spinner bait in the pic in Dave’s post. I had another hook up the following cast a bit further down but he fell off just as he neared the bank.

I got a few hits during the night on surface but no hook ups. We turned around and made our way back to camp. Set up our swags and hit the sack.

I was up first in the morning and rolled out of the swag to be greeted by this.

Not a bad way to start the day and I moved our little lady Sheryl to get a bit better view of the river while Dave still slept. Really wish I had the Sunday paper actually.

With that job done I rolled up my swag and loaded my kayak on the roof before Dave woke.
When we first arrived and got out of the car at the designated camp spot I got a prickle in my foot. I noticed that the car tyres we also covered in them as well. There were a few about that’s for sure. Here is a pic of my pluggers. The pile was about a centremeter thick in some spots. I tried cleaning them but when I got home I ditched them.

We went back into town after packing up, disposed of our waste and ordered a few Bacon and Egg Rolls for breaky.

About a hungie k’s up the road we dropped into a smaller system.

Launch spot.

It was a lot smaller system that is for sure. Quite tight in some spots actually.

I ended up with two yellas out of consecutive holes. Only took one pic of them as they were of no real size.

I was ahead of Dave and I got to the end of what we were going to do. There were a few trees that we already slid over and we were not going to go over any others.

Pic of Dave starting to work his way into one of the pools.

That section didn’t take us long to work over and about an hour later we had packed up and heading for spot 3 on the way home.

I never launched into this hole but Dave did for no result.  So after that it was after midday and we headed back up the highway home.

Dave thanks for the laughs. Always enjoyable. Sweetwater, shame you couldn’t make it.

See you all on the water somewhere.

Yes, I enjoy looking through old trip reports too which are archived on sweetwater.

That's what is a shame about people abandoning all the forums and only using stalkbook (which I'm proudly not on stalkbook). My reports I use for future reference.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Cheers,
Dave.

Dave,
Are these spots open to the public or private property?
Also, are they canoe only or would they suit a very small tinny?
Thx
Chris

X2 of what he said.

Tinnies are virtually confined to the weirs, ; eg. Bonshaw and Cunningham. Elsewhere tinnies are confined to the one hole, that's why its better to use a canoe or kayak.

The Texas tourist brochure has all the reserves and amenities listed. Worth a look if you're not familiar with the area.
