Pindari Dam
« on: February 22, 2011, 06:18:27 PM »
A mate and I headed for Pindari this week for (hopefully) a few days of Cod fishing. Unfortunately the dam is suffering from the triple affects of blue green algae, lots of surface weed and near zero visability. We stayed for 2 nights and persisted after catching one stonker Yellow Belly, probably my personal best, but that was it. We travelled all the way upstream to the Severn but still no go although the weed diminished the further up we went. Water surface temp was in the high 20's to low 30's, and I think that with all the weed and so forth the dissolved oxygen levels must have been pretty low. That aside it's avery picturesque dam with plenty of big granite cliffs plunging down into the water. Further upstream it just gets better and better. We were using spinner baits almost exclusively because they were the only thing that looked like having a chance of being noticed in the grubby water. The Yella took a CodMan spinner and was well hooked. I may try again, maybe not. On the way home the Dumaresq was looking good so I reckong that will be next on the agenda.
Cheers chaps,
JD

Thanks for the report takrat, shame about the conditions, but it seems to be a recurring theme around all the dams at the moment.
Pindari is a beautiful spot & I would love to spend a few days exploring the river above the dam.
Hopefully you will get back there one day when the cod are hungry.

Cheers Andrew

Thanks Andrew, have a look at the gallery under Brag Board and you can see the size of the Yella. It was some compensation  for the lack of Cod.
Cheers,
John

Hi John
Fished with a mate from Ashford in the Severn R.  just below Pindari Sunday afternoon - evening it was very quiet too!   The water temp in the river was really warm. Congratulations on your pb yella.

G'day Denis,

I was going to ask John whether he tried fishing the Severn R. downstream of Pindari. I was thinking of heading down that way soon rock hopping across the boulders downstream. Please fill us in if things improve.

Cheers Dave

Hey Denis, You're right about the water temps we had them up to 31 at times and I'm sure that didn't help matters. We had the same problem a few eeks back at Glen Lyon. Think I'll go back to the moving water.
Cheers,
John

Hey Dave, if you intend doing any rock hopping beware of the lichen, I took a header on a rock and smashed the rod tip bent the bail arm and pulled a thigh muscle. All in all pretty much the usual.
Cheers mate,
John
