Wyaralong dam photos.
« on: October 20, 2011, 08:08:42 AM »
Here are a few photos of Wyaralong ramp and general surrounds.
Looks like SEQ water used the same drongo to design the ramp there as the Hinze ones.
Ramp is steep and long with only one lane.
There is a area half way down the ramp where you can do a 3 point turn with a car ( See the hilux in photo) but no way you could turn a trailer in it.
Probably only room to park about 7 trailers at top of ramp.
Be fun unloading yaks off roof racks with steep ramp.
Amenities clean and well maintained but with a bit of thought could be a lot more user friendly.
Why place barbeques , picnic tables and kids playground half way down the hill, it may look good on the photos but not very practical.
Looks like a great dam to fish.
Liked the sign at end of ramp about not being allowed to swim your horse there.
 Let the stocking begin.

Its bloody stupid isnt it Ray.. i drive right down to the water to put my yak in and drag it to the side where theres a bit of a flat spot and drive it back up the hill. Another mate uses a C-tug trolly to go from top to bottom. As for th bbq areas obviously they wer smokin some wild grass when they thought of putting them where they did.

Ray,

Do you have any pictures of the Kayak/canoe launching area up the top of the dam? Looking from the hwy , that area still has some timber left in it.

Cheers,
Dave.

Would you be talking about the small camping area off one of the trails Dave ? I heard it was pretty small and difficult to reach and do not know of another launching area up the top end, The timberd areas are only shallow unless you follow the old creek bed. I watched the dam rise and fall the majority of the timber would only be a meter or 2 if that.

We should go investigate one day .....   :thumb

Sounds like a plan Steve. The old creek bed's tree line would be the go :)

Cheers,
Dave.

Bushwacker and I finally checked out the upper reaches of Wyaralong Dam today. We launched from the downstream side of Old Beaudesert Road. I'd usually embed a google map, but it seems google hasn't updated the area since the dam was built. Old Beaudesert Rd can be accessed by turning off the Boonah-Beaudesert rd from the Boonah end. At this location , the dam is just a flooded creek(Teviot Brook), between 1.5 and 2.5metres deep. There are plenty of trees with wet feet and there is going to be plenty dead in the future if the 100% level is maintained .

The view downstream of the bridge.

We didn't land any fish, Steve had a couple of bumps. We saw a few carp though, splashing around. Even though the dam is yet to be stocked, this area looked very fishy. Surely some Bass, the odd cod or some of the MSG'd yellas (rumour) will find all this cover inviting.

Cheers,
Dave.

Ramp design, parking,  etc... looks more like something they had to do but not particularly keen to get people there to enjoy the dam.

Carp, good for fertiliser.

Any redclaw in the area that can be accessed land based? If so, where would you recommend, it's a large area to cover by foot.

Thanks, Bondy
