launch locations to yak the bris river
« on: April 02, 2012, 07:20:02 PM »
Hi all,
As the title states i was wondering if any sweet water members could help me out with a location or locations
to launch my kayak on the bris river to get amongst the resident bass population.
After reading through numerous reports on here and searching google earth, harpeng rd is mentioned alot.
It looks as tho the rd ends between 2 properties. I see gates and fences mentioned alot but i think maybe that launch spot
would be better suited if someone in the know was willing to meet for a fish and show me the way! The other spot i have found is what looks like a level crossing on Wivenhoe pocket rd, not long after turning off Brisbane valley rd. Would the level crossing be better suited
to someone learning the river or is there a better launch spot in the areas mentioned?
Alot of questions i know :-\ but thanks in advance for any info anyone is willing to provide!

Jason

Harpeng Road is ok to give a go. Do not try and paddle down stream when you get to the junction just upstream.

Did you read that, read it again.

Shines Road is also there

Lowood Bends

The crossing you talk about is Twin Bridges on Wivenhoe Pocket Road. Esiest location. Give that a go first, get used to the river.

Where Wivenhoe Pocket rd crosses the river, that area is known as Twin Bridges( or Twinnys) . The easiest of launching locations on the river.

I and a few others have been 'harping on' about Harpeng rd, it too is quite an easy launch but has only just become available again . Not getting cricket scores there yet, but the size has been awesome.

My local, Heart Attack Hill( the end of Shines rd) is a difficult launch but well worth the effort in the past. As you drive to the end of the street it goes to dirt and there are a couple of houses at the end, follow the tyre tracks through the grassed area on the right. There is a wire gate next to the pink ribbon, go through that and follow the track down. Just remember to follow the track to the left when you get to the last flood measurement sign. Going to the right is bloody hard, even if you are trying to launch/retrieve even the smallest of kayaks.

Over towards Lowood, you can launch from the 'Lowood bends', its the track going down to the river just near the 60 ahead sign. There is another launch option in Lowood, behind the industrial estate ( Kleinhans rd I think) look for the pink ribbon.

Spinnerbaits in 3/8oz or 1/2oz have been my first choice of lure. Bassman is my favourite brand at the moment, in gold and black ,white and caramel or silver with an orange skirt.

Goodluck, don't be scared off using Harpeng road due to all the hoohaa over the road closure BS.

Cheers,
Dave.
