Native fish breeding seminar at Narrandera
01 Dec 2014 - NSW Fisheries

Riverina residents interested in native fish are invited to attend a community seminar on Wednesday 10 December in Narrandera to learn more about the NSW Government's fish breeding and stocking program.

The seminar – "Breeding fish, do we just add water?" – will be presented by Matthew McLellan, DPI Hatchery Manager, at the Narrandera Fisheries Centre.

"DPI Narrandera Fisheries Centre is one of the State's biggest producers of native fish, with over a million fingerlings of golden perch, Murray cod and silver perch stocked into impoundments and rivers across the state this year," Mr McLellan said.

"The seminar will explain the history of fish production at Narrandera over the past 50 years, the techniques we use to breed native fish and how the stocking program works.

"The DPI's inland fish stocking program aims to boost populations of native species and enhance recreational fishing opportunities for the one million recreational fishers in NSW.

"Local waterways across the State – as far north as Inverell, Ashford and Tamworth and south to Jerilderie, Urana and Wagga Wagga – benefit from fish produced at Narrandera Fisheries Centre."

Mr McLellan has a wealth of experience in fish breeding, having worked in native fish hatcheries for 15 years including managing the native fish breeding program at the Narrandera Fisheries Centre for the past six years.

Participants will be able to tour the facilities at the John Lake Centre, featuring a native fish aquarium, which will be open from 6pm to 8.30pm. DPI Fisheries staff will also be on hand to answer questions.

The seminar is free and there will be a BBQ meal and light refreshments after the presentation.

Details: Wednesday 10 December from 6.30pm at the DPI's Narrandera Fisheries Centre, John Lake Centre, Buckingbong Road, Narrandera.

RSVP: Due to limited seating and for catering purposes, please register your attendance with the Narrandera Fisheries Centre (02) 6958 8200 by Tuesday 9 December. You must be registered to attend.
